" What is there to be said about Pantera? Their influence has spread further and wider than most of the music-loving community outside of the metal heads will give them credit for.
Despite appearing seemingly ashamed of their first four albums ("Metal Magic" (1983), "Projects in the Jungle" (1984), "I Am The Night" (1985) and "Power Metal" (1988), although only the last one with Phil Anselmo on vocals), their latter five have shaped the face of modern heavy metal.
Driven by Dimebag Darrel's classic brutal guitar tone showcased in the riff laden 'Cowboys From Hell' the hook heavy 'Mouth For War' or the brutal 'Fucking Hostile' counteracted by the slower melodic tunes 'Cemetery Gates' or the Black Sabbath cover 'Planet Caravan' this album takes shape.
The later albums show front man Phil Anselmo heading back to his power metal roots has he lets off screams giving a nod to Bruce "Air Raid Siren" Dickinson through tracks like 'Drag The Waters' or the excellent 'Where You Come From', which was surprisingly simply a bonus track tacked on the end of their "101 Proof" live album while 'Revolution Is My Name' sends Pantera into an effect heavy world where brothers Dimebag and Vinnie went a little nuts in the studio.
The album closes with two soundtrack albums, 'Immortally Insane' from Heavy Metall 2000 and the Poison Idea cover 'The Badge' from The Crow soundtrack back in '94. Now once and for all on one disc (and bonus DVD of the videos if you hurry up) you can see why Pantera are the gods of modern metal. ""
